Three ways to get a 3D printed house model
You have a floor plan and want a physical model. There are three realistic paths: model it yourself in CAD, hire a designer, or use an automated tool.
Option 1: Manual CAD modeling
Open your floor plan in SketchUp, Blender, or Fusion 360 and build the model by hand. Trace walls, extrude to height, cut door and window openings, export as STL.
Time: 3–8 hours per model. Cost: Free (if you own software). Skill: High.
Best for people who already have CAD skills and need highly customized models.
Option 2: Hire a freelancer
Outsource to a designer on Fiverr or Upwork. A simple apartment model costs $100–250 and takes 2–5 days. Complex houses run $400–800.
Time: Days to weeks. Cost: $100–800 per model. Skill: None required.
Best for one-off projects where budget is not a concern.

Print settings that actually work

Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Three specific problems account for most first-print failures reported to us:
- Warping on the largest floor. PLA shrinks as it cools. On a 200mm+ footprint at 1:100, warp lifts the corners. Fix: use a brim (8 mm minimum), enable a heated bed if you have one (60°C for PLA), and consider gluing painter's tape to the print surface for extra adhesion.
- Wall openings that print as blocked windows. If the AI misdetected a window as a wall, the STL export bakes that in — you can't fix it in the slicer. Fix: verify every window in the Ritn3D review step before generating and downloading the STL.
- The base isn't flat. If your slicer's auto-orient rotates the model, the base may not sit flat on the bed. Fix: manually orient the model floor-down before slicing. Ritn3D's STL export uses a flat base specifically to avoid this issue, but slicer auto-orient can sometimes flip it.
